Project Overview

🔷 Project Overview

To improve security and operational efficiency at Nepal’s Biratnagar Airport, Mahavir Shree International Pvt. Ltd. (MSIPL) installed advanced X-ray screening systems developed by Smiths Detection. This initiative was driven by the growing need for automated baggage inspection at a domestic airport constrained by space and infrastructure challenges.

Smiths Detection, known globally for its high-performance threat detection systems, provided two models for deployment: the HS 100100T for hold baggage and the HS 6040-2is HR for hand baggage. These systems are equipped with advanced features such as HiTrax electronics, dual-view imaging, high-resolution scanning, and material distinction capabilities (HI MAT Plus). They support both oversized and regular luggage screening with high detection reliability and minimal human intervention.

Before the installation, baggage checks were largely manual, leading to long queues and increased workload for security personnel. The new systems eliminated the need for physically opening every bag, thus improving throughput and significantly reducing passenger waiting times. Moreover, these scanners enhance threat detection capacity, allowing for better identification of weapons, explosives, and contraband.

However, the implementation faced several challenges. Biratnagar Airport, like many domestic airports in Nepal, suffers from limited space and substandard infrastructure. The MSIPL team had to overcome several hurdles, such as performing metal and carpentry work, laying power cables, and creating partitions between scanner systems and airline counters using wooden structures. Furthermore, the lack of trained CAAN (Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal) personnel posed operational difficulties post-installation.

Despite these setbacks, the scanners were successfully deployed and integrated into the airport’s daily operations. The project emphasized the need for regular system upgrades, improved infrastructure planning, and skilled personnel to maintain and operate advanced security systems.

This case study reflects MSIPL’s ability to integrate high-end security technology into constrained environments, contributing significantly to passenger safety, national security, and improved airport operations.
